Among the high tech services available is Laparoscopic Surgery, alternatively known as Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). Essentially, laparoscopic surgery allows the surgeon to access the abdominal cavity through a small incision using a small instrument (laparoscope) attached to a camera unit and TV monitor to visualize the organ affected. Similar small surgical instruments will then be used through additional minimal incisions should removal of a diseased organ is necessary without resorting to traditional open surgery.
Laparoscopic surgery has been proven to result to less postoperative pain, lower risk of complications, shorter recovery, and better cosmetic results. Patients are discharged early and able to return to work sooner than expected.
Laparoscopic surgery has become the “gold standard” in the surgical management of common disorders such as gallstones and appendicitis. It has also become one of the invasive diagnostic option when traditional imaging like X-ray and CT scan require confirmation especially in abdominal cancer staging.
